It used to be called “Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Square”, in memory of the first President Chiang Kai-shek who passed away in 1975. The tablet was changed from“perfectly impartial”, meant to describe Chiang Kai-shek to “Liberty Square” in December 2007 during the reign of the former President Chen Shui Bian.

During the “823” artillery bombardment by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army between 23-Aug-1958 and 05-Oct-1958, KinMen archipelago received no less than 475,000 rounds of shell, mainly on KinMen Island (the main island of archipelago) and LieYu (the 2nd largest island of the archipelago). I toured these two islands on a rented scooter. This photograph was taken at the Victory Gate of LieYu, in front of a monument which commemorates the successful defense against the “823” bombardment.
